PressPausePlay Documentary

If you’re at all interested in how music, film, books and art are created and consumed (and have an hour and a half to spare) I really recommend watching this excellent documentary PressPausePlay from House Of Radon; it’s nothing to do with me but I found it a fascinating watch!

Some great interviews with Seth Godin, Bill Drummond, Hank Shocklee, Moby and many more. You can actually download the film completely for free directly from the filmmakers’ website www.presspauseplay.com and then donate whatever amount  you feel you should (and if you enjoy it, I urge you do).

‘Sex Dolls: Stoned Mode’ Video Uses My Eerie Music ‘The Raven’!

Sex Dolls | Stoned Mode

Here’s a slightly creepy and unusual video that I wouldn’t really have expected to hear my music in! Sex Dolls: Stoned Mode by the people over at the Super Deluxe YouTube channel is a short behind-the-scenes look at how sex dolls are made…

There’s no narration but my music track The Raven plays throughout giving a very unsettling and eerie atmosphere to what would probably otherwise be quite a lighthearted quirky video. If nothing else it goes to show how you can completely alter the feel of a video just by the use of music.

The Raven is available to download or license here on my site:

Spain Time Lapse Video From Martien Janssen Featuring Tempest

Following on from Martien Janssen‘s last time lapse video The Weather which featured some of my royalty free piano music, here’s another really nice atmospheric video filmed in southeast Spain and featuring my orchestral track Tempest.

“This trip was all about getting up before sunrise, catching every sunset and traveling or relaxing during daytime. Land- and seascapes were beautiful and I’ve really come to love the wild coast and wild west country, where Sergio Leone once filmed the legendary westerns.”

I particularly like the igloo-style accomodation! See more of Martien’s photography and design at www.zy-co.com

EU VAT Simplification Proposal (VATMOSS)

EU VAT MOSS 2015There’s been some good news regarding the VAT charges on digital sales that was introduced back in January 2015 (more popularly known as VATMOSS).

In case you were unaware, anyone making online digital sales from that date (including music, video, apps etc.) has been obliged to record the geographic location of their customers and then to charge tax if the customer is based in the European Union (EU).

This has been extremely problematic for small businesses, musicians and indie developers etc. due to having to know where their customers are located before they’ve even bought anything from you. It also means we have to constantly monitor and keep up to date with changes in VAT rates across 28 countries and then add that rate to the order at checkout, which means increased prices for most European customers (not to mention lots of admin and changes to our websites).

However, after much campaigning and writing to our MPs (and the incredible hard work of Clare Josa and her team at the EU VAT action group http://euvataction.org) the European Commissioner Pierre Moscovici has finally seen sense and proposed changes to the laws so that businesses making cross-border EU sales under €10,000 will be able to go back to applying the VAT rules for their own country.

For me, this means that I will no longer have to charge VAT to my EU customers meaning everyone will be charged the same price! (And I can be relieved from hours of pointless admin and record keeping!)

However it’s still only a proposal at the moment so even if all goes well, it could still take at least a year until I’ll be able to implement this. So for now I need to continue charging VAT to EU customers. But it’s great news and a complete reversal of what the bureaucrats initially said was a big fuss being made by small businesses.

Code Of Silence Documentary Trailer Featuring Black Orchid

My music track Black Orchid is featured in this dramatic trailer for documentary Code Of Silence by Scilla Alecci & George Steptoe. Code Of Silence is an investigative documentary about the abuses female prison officers endure at the hands of their male coworkers, and the institutions that allow these abuses to continue.

“As more American women than ever before choose to work in corrections, they face an additional challenge to their safety: harassment and retaliation from male officers. Code Of Silence tells the story of seven current and former corrections officers who have overcome their fear of reprisal and challenged the system.”
